Whether it’s your first time in front of the camera or your annual studio photo day, having a few go-to poses ready can make all the difference. The goal isn’t to overthink it- it’s to showcase your technique, personality, and artistry in a way that feels true to you.

Keep It Simple
Simple poses, done with precision and clean technique, always photograph better than complicated ones that don’t translate on camera. Think of strong lines, balance, and clear focus. A perfectly pointed foot and graceful hand placement can elevate even the most basic position.
Incorporate Character
If you’re performing a piece with a storyline or character, bring that energy into your photos.Your facial expressions and movement should align with the role you’re portraying- whether that’s fierce, joyful, or elegant. A still image can still tell a compelling story!
Make Use of the Costume
Your costume is part of your performance- let it move with you! Things such as big skirts, tassels, or flowing sleeves can create a sense of motion and texture. A well-timed spin or gentle lift of fabric can add beautiful visual interest.
Remember the Floor
Not every photo needs to be mid-air! Use the floor to your advantage- sitting, kneeling, or lying poses can look elegant and grounded. Sometimes the simplest shapes, when performed with control, create the most striking images.
Acro Tricks: Choose Wisely
Acro skills can be impressive, but not every trick is photo-friendly. Think about how the shape translates on camera- where is your face? Is your head buried or visible? Pick contortions that show clean lines, flexibility, and control, rather than those that look lost in the angle.
Head Position Matters
A small change in head angle can transform a photo.Try variations- looking to the camera, softly to the side, or toward your hand. Each creates a different mood and flow. Your photographer can guide you, but it’s helpful to know what feels and looks best for your style.
Jumps – Less Is More
Jumps can look incredible, but they’re technically demanding. If you’re going for a leap or jump shot, choose one you can execute confidently and consistently. A clean, controlled jump will always look better than one that’s half-finished or off balance.
Focus on Details
It’s the little things that make a big difference:
Point your toes
Extend through your fingers
Keep your face engaged
Maintain strong posture and clean lines
Neat costumes (no loose laces or unwanted straps on show!)
Prepare and Warm Up
Before your session, take time to warm up and rehearse your chosen poses. You’ll move more freely, avoid injury, and your confidence will show through in every shot.
Your dance photoshoot isn’t just about perfection- it’s about expression. Know your strengths, trust your training, and bring your personality to every pose. The most memorable images are the ones that capture you- confident, graceful, and completely in your element.
